de SÉBASTIEN BAUD & CORINE SOMBRUN

Summary:

Since the dawn of time, shamans have fascinated us. Who are they? What is their role? What are their tools? How does one become a shaman? Richly illustrated, this book depicts the evolution of the figure of the shaman in the Western imagination. From the first accounts of the encounter to the stories of shamans of today, the ethnologist SEBASTIEN BAUD explores the links between visible and invisible, human and animal, culture and nature as the shamanic societies conceive them. 2 3

CORINE SOMBRUN, in turn, presents us with the exciting quest for the links between trance and neuroscience. A true journey through time to discover the shamanism of yesterday and today.

masqueMasks for the Dance Phagli Festival - Himachal Pradesh
Collection Tom van Groeningen

by Tom van Groeningen with an interview by dr. Stephan Steinmetz PhD

The more than a hundred tribal masks in this publication are a selection of the extensive collection of the Dutchman Tom van Groeningen (1948) of the extraordinary masks from the Kullu Valley in the State of Himachal Pradesh in North-West India. Van Groeningen is not an average collector of tribal art. He chooses on the basis of beauty and provenance and focuses on the stories and people behind the masks. He puts the objects into the context of the religious and cultural settings of the region in India. ‘All my masks have danced,’ he says with a twinkling in his eye. What drives Van Groeningen? How did his collection grow? What makes his masks so appealing to the imagination? These are the questions that are answered in this rich publication.

Dealing with Disasters2020Dealing with Disasters

Diana Riboli et Stefano Beggiora du comité d'honneur de l'association, avec le professeur David Torri sortent un nouveau livre intitulé : Dealing with Disasters - Perspectives from Eco-Cosmologies.

"Providing a fresh look at some of the pressing issues of our world today, this collection focuses on experiential and ritualized coping practices in response to a multitude of environmental challenges—cyclones, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, earthquakes, warfare and displacements of peoples and environmental resource exploitation. Eco-cosmological practices conducted by skilled healing practitioners utilize knowledge embedded in the cosmological grounding of place and experiences of place and the landscapes in which such experience is encapsulated. A range of geographic case studies are presented in this volume, exploring Asia, Europe, the Pacific, and South America. With special reference throughout to ritual as a mode of seeking the stabilization, renewal, and continuity of life processes, this volume will be of particular interest to readers working in shamanic and healing practices, environmental concerns surrounding sustainability and conservation, ethnomedical systems, and religious and ritual studies."
